A Place for Nature in the Development of Northern Metropolis
This tour begins at the Urban Mini-forest pilot project in Fanling North, a pioneering effort by CEDD and HKILA to bring nature into city planning. We will then explore Long Valley Nature Park, Hong Kong’s largest freshwater wetland, where rich biodiversity thrives in harmony with traditional farming. The day will conclude at the Fanling Golf Course, a serene landscape at the heart of ongoing debates about land use, conservation and community needs. Together, these stops highlight the dynamic balance between ecology and urban development in the northern part of New Territories.

ITINERARY 2 -
Where Land Meets Water: Conservation in Pak Nai & Mai Po
Experience Hong Kong’s extraordinary biodiversity through two conservation landmarks at Deep Bay Area, which lie within the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, making the area an important stopover and wintering habitat for migratory waterbirds, including globally threatened species. Its intertidal mudflats are especially rich in benthic invertebrates, forming a critical food source for shorebirds, while mangroves and oyster reefs stabilize sediment, enhance water quality, and provide carbon sinks. These ecosystems also buffer coastal communities from storms and sea-level rise.
At Pak Nai, we will explore how The Nature Conservancy (TNC) safeguards its wetland habitats through science-based, community-centered conservation. Its program works to protect and restore wetland habitats, improve management of coastal areas for both biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods, and promote nature-based solutions for climate resilience. Then we journey to the Mai Po Nature Reserve, a Ramsar site managed by WWF-Hong Kong to protect critical habitats for migratory birds. Enjoy an afternoon of immersive bird watching among mudflats and mangroves, along with a stunning sunset over Deep Bay to conclude the day.

Liminal Borderlands: A Decade of Rural Village Revitalization at the Starling Inlet
(Day Tour)
Set along the Starling Inlet border, this exploration ventures into Sha Tou Kok—a Frontier Closed Area established in 1951—and two rural Hakka villages on the Hong Kong side. Historically sustained by farming and fishing, these liminal spaces were abandoned due to urban isolation, leaving behind pristine cultural landscapes and rich biodiversity. The itinerary highlights over a decade of rural revitalization by contrasting Yung Shue Au’s early-stage rejuvenation with Lai Chi Wo’s mature, sustainable model—a project awarded Special Recognition for Sustainable Development in the 2020 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Participants will gain insights into community-based, ecologically sensitive agricultural rehabilitation, built heritage restoration, social and natural capital replenishment, and other community initiatives under village revitalization frameworks.

It continues at Tsui Ping River, an aging nullah transformed into a vibrant waterway that enhances flood resilience while integrating landscape and architectural elements to foster connectivity and sustainability. The journey concludes at the vibrant Cha Kwo Ling Promenade Park. Located on the rooftop of a sewage pumping station, the promenade park blends creative play with waterfront scenery to provide a fun and vibrant recreational space for people of all ages. Together, these sites highlight innovative approaches to ecological design, urban resilience, and community engagement in Hong Kong’s dense city fabric.

Landscapes Across Hong Kong Island’s Transect
This tour traces a unique urban transect across northern Hong Kong Island. Beginning at Victoria Peak, participants gain a panoramic perspective of the city’s dramatic topography and dense urban fabric. The journey continues down to the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, the oldest park in the city and one of the oldest zoological and botanical centres of the world. Situated in the business district of Hong Kong Island, the nearby Hong Kong Park blends heritage, nature and public amenity. The tour concludes at The Henderson, a new architectural landmark designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and PWP Landscape Architecture that exemplifies contemporary approaches to sustainable design. Together, these stops reveal the interplay of natural terrain, cultural heritage and cutting-edge urban development.

Shifting Shorelines: A History of Hong Kong’s Reclamation by Foot and Tram
Trace the literal expansion of Hong Kong Island on a journey exploring how land reclamation and natural landscape features define the city's topography. The tour starts along the original, historic baseline. Wander Through King George V Park and Li Sing Street Playground, we admire the old Chinese banyans with sprawling roots gripping the heritage stone walls. Pass Hollywood Road Park's traditional pavilions before crossing the historic shoreline onto entirely reclaimed ground. At Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park and Sai Ying Pun Harbourfront Park, we look out across the harbour from expansive, modern waterfront lawns where ships once anchored. A highlight of the tour features an iconic tram, gliding down tracks that trace the 19th-century waterfront. We then conclude the journey in the east, bridging architectural history and modern design. Explore the red-brick aesthetics and shady courtyards of Oi! Art Space—originally the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club built on the old coast—before walking out onto the open-air panoramic breakwaters of the East Coast Park Precinct and Boardwalk.

Wetland Encounters: From Park to Fishponds
This tour introduces participants to Hong Kong’s unique wetland system. The journey begins at the Hong Kong Wetland Park. Planned as an ecological mitigation in compensation for wetland areas lost during the development of Tin Shui Wai New Town, the Hong Kong Wetland Park has become one of the most successful ecological restoration projects in the region and a model for the integration of ecology with high density urbanism. The original design team leader and current park manager will discuss the design and adaptive management of the component ecological habitats, water systems and the continuing development of ideas about ecological value.
In the afternoon, we would explore San Tin, a mosaic of traditional fishponds, villages and open wetlands that sustain migratory birds and local biodiversity. This unique cultural now stands at a pivotal moment as San Tin Technopole development reshapes its ecological and cultural future. Together, these sites highlight the interplay of ecological conservation, cultural heritage, and sustainable development in the north-western New Territories and Deep Bay wetland system.

As rapid urbanization and extreme weather intensify global flood risks, this technical tour explores how Hong Kong’s latest landscape designs deliver high-performance, climate-resilient urban spaces. Shifting away from traditional, hidden gray infrastructure, this journey demonstrates the seamless integration of the Sponge City concept and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) directly into the urban public realm.
Visiting three recently completed, landmark projects, participants will observe how public parks, commercial developments, and revitalized urban waterways act as natural, multi-tiered water retention systems. Together, these stops illustrate how modern, high-performance landscapes can double as decentralized water storage— mitigating flood risks while actively enhancing urban cooling, biodiversity, and community placemaking.
